Campaign – Week 3 Update
📣 Campaign Update — Week 3: Hitting the Streets and Listening to Cornwall
Hi folks!
It’s been another busy week on the campaign trail! This was a shorter week because of the Thanksgiving holiday, and I also chaired our monthly Municipal & Emergency Services (MES) Committee meeting. Despite only having four days available for door-to-door canvassing, the campaign team and I continued to cover ground, connect with residents, and hear what matters most to our community.
Here are a few highlights from Week 3!
🗳️ The Candidate Nomination Period Has Closed!
Friday, October 16th, at 2 p.m. marked the deadline for candidates to officially declare their intention to run in this municipal election.
Congratulations to Mayor Minerva McCourt on her acclamation and securing another term as Cornwall’s Mayor! Her Worship has been an excellent leader for our community, and I hope to have the opportunity to rejoin her on Council.
As I’ve mentioned in previous updates, Cornwall has an open-ward electoral system. Unlike municipalities divided into smaller wards or districts, Cornwall’s municipal boundaries encompass the entire town, and councillor candidates seek the support of voters throughout Cornwall.
With more than six candidates declaring for the six councillor positions, we’re officially heading to the polls! The six candidates who receive the most votes will form the next Council.
🚪 Week 3 on the Campaign Trail
Our campaign team has been busy! Despite the shorter week, we’ve seen approximately a 14% increase in the number of residents home when we visit, with evenings generally proving to be the most productive time to connect.
So far, we’ve:
-
- 👋 Connected directly with nearly 400 Cornwall residents
- 🏠 Knocked on almost 900 doors
That might sound like a lot of doors, but because of our Open Ward system, its only about one-quarter of the homes in Cornwall we represent! We’re hoping to reach many more households over the next two weeks but with working a full-time job outside of my council responsibilities, it’s challenging to get to every door. Nonetheless, I love getting to meet people on campaign trail, and my team and I are going to try our very best to get to every door!
Our team is incredibly grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response, encouragement, and support we’ve received. And I have to give a special shout-out to everyone who has offered snacks, treats, and meals along the way! 😂❤️ Cornwall is home to some fantastic cooks and bakers, and our campaign team certainly hasn’t gone hungry!
🏢📈 What I’m Hearing at the Doors
Commercial Development Is the Top Priority
By far, the most common concern we’re hearing is the need for more commercial development in Cornwall. Residents want more opportunities to shop, eat out, and enjoy entertainment right here in our own community. I couldn’t agree more.
If I’m fortunate enough to be re-elected, pursuing additional commercial investment in Cornwall will be a top priority. We have an opportunity to strengthen our local economy, expand the services available to residents, and create more reasons for people to shop and spend time in our town.
🚦 Traffic Safety
Traffic safety continues to be another recurring concern. Residents have raised ideas such as:
-
-
- More pedestrian crosswalks
- Speed radar signs
- Speed humps
- Additional stop signs
- Photo radar
-
Community safety has long been a passion of mine. In acquiring my undergrad degree from St. Thomas University (’01), I double majored in Criminology and Sociology, before becoming a Peace Officer with the Provincial and federal governments. With that understanding, I have a deep passion and understanding for community safety. So much so, that when I wasn’t on council, I previously petitioned the Town to consider several of the above measures. During this Council term, traffic safety and policing have been part of the MES committee’s responsibilities. These conversations are important, and I’ll continue listening to residents and working to identify practical ways to improve safety throughout Cornwall.
📸 A Busy Saturday!
Our team packed plenty into Saturday!
We started the day at the APM Centre to attend a collectibles showcase before heading out to canvass the Elliott River School neighbourhood. Unfortunately, we had an engagement rate of only about 10% at the doors, as most residents weren’t home. We regrouped over a late lunch with fellow candidates at Sam’s in Cornwall before heading back out to canvass the Warren Grove area. We capped off the day by doing some much-needed maintenance on our lawn signs! 🪧😂
Those poor wire stands have taken an absolute beating in the Island wind. Keeping them upright has become a campaign project of its own! I’ve resorted to using wire and bolt cutters to modify a few stands in hopes of getting another couple of weeks out of them. Let’s just say we’ve learned a few lessons about lawn-sign construction for future elections!
A big thank-you to everyone who has helped install, repair, and maintain our signs. This campaign is very much a team effort, and I appreciate every bit of help.
🗳️ First Advance Poll — Saturday, October 24th!
The first of three advance polling opportunities is coming up this Saturday, October 24th, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the APM Centre.
You should have received your voter information card in the mail by now. Please bring your card and valid identification with you when you go to vote.
Advance polling is a convenient opportunity to cast your ballot before Election Day, so mark your calendar!
🏛️ Council Business Continues
While candidates are busy campaigning, the work of Council continues.
Our monthly Committee of Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st, at 4:30 p.m. It’s important that municipal business continues to move forward while we engage with residents throughout the election campaign.
🤝 Have We Missed You at the Door?
With nearly 4,000 doors across Cornwall, there’s a good chance we haven’t connected with everyone yet. If we’ve missed you and you’d like to discuss a municipal issue, ask a question, or share an idea for Cornwall’s future, please reach out anytime. I’d be more than happy to have a conversation.
Thank you again to everyone who has welcomed us at the door, shared their concerns, offered encouragement, helped with campaign signs, or supported the campaign in any way. Your kindness and enthusiasm mean a great deal to me and my family.
We have plenty of work ahead, and I look forward to getting back out into more neighbourhoods this coming week!
I hope everyone has a great, safe, and prosperous week.
Take care,
Corey Frizzell
